Dating back to 1805, La Vestale was performed in Paris for the first time on 15 December 1807 at the Théâtre de l'Académie Impériale de Musique in the presence of Empress Josephine. The tragic opera in three acts was set to music by Gaspare Spontini with a libretto by Victor-Joseph-Etienne de Jouy.
